Gossip Girl is a drama television series that airs on the American television network the CW and is based on the book series, Gossip Girl, written by Cecily von Ziegesar. It premiered on September 9, 2007. Gossip Girl creators are Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and filming takes place in New York City, New York, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Upper East Side. The series was just recently renewed for its third season in February 2009.
Gossip Girl is narrated by an unseen blogger who is the voice of Kristen Bell. The storyline follows the lives of five privileged teenagers who attend one of the best private schools located in the Upper East Side of New York. The majority of episodes in the first season followed the book very closely. Every episode begins the same way: the blog page of the Gossip Girl and a picture from the pilot episode, followed by a recap of past events. Scenes change at a very past pace and Gossip Girl drops comments throughout all scenes.
The Gossip Girl series adopted the nine main characters from the novel and made them all into recurring speaking roles. Blake Lively plays the shows protagonist and main character, Serena van der Woodsen, who is the girl everyone wants to be, the “it girl.” Penn Badgley plays Dan Humphrey, who somehow becomes part of the Manhattan scene even though he is somewhat of an outsider. Leighton Meester plays Blair Waldorf and is a dominant figure in Manhattan’s social scene. Chace Crawford plays Nate Archibald and is known as the “Golden Boy.” He is rich, accomplished, and flawless. Ed Westwick plays Chuck Bass who is known for his troubled past. He is more or less the adversary and is always causing some sort of trouble.
The first episode of Gossip Girl achieved roughly 3.65 million viewers. This dismal number put the show in last place during its Wednesday night 9:00 pm time slot for viewer ratings. The series went on to lose viewers in the following season because of opposition from competing programs on ANB and NBC. Gossip Girl’s current and third season viewer numbers have fallen to two million, its lowest point since its premier.
Gossip Girl got mixed reviews at the start of the series. Although it was highly anticipated by viewers and critics during the 2007 season because of its being based on a New York Times best seller, however it was deemed a “guilty pleasure” by some, rather than a must-watch television program. Many critics have claimed the series doesn’t accurately follow the plot of the novel, however author Cecily con Ziegesar has overtly supported the show.
Gossip Girl and its cast-members have been nominated for various awards and won a few as well. The show won “Choice TV Show Drama” and “Choice TV Breakout Drama” at the Teen Choice Awards in 2008 and 2009. It was nominated for “Breakthrough Performance” at the 2009 Primetime Emmy’s.
