Movie Ratings And What They Suggest For Your Family

The large movie studios have long been giving movies a rating to let persons know how apt or improper the movie may be for particular spectators. Characteristically it is to shelter children from exceptionally violent or sexual scenes or it may even be as simple as smoking or bad language. The concern is whose opinion rates the film. Many people will disagree with a rating and there have even been copyright cases where a company purposely removed scenes that were deemed improper, even when a movie was rated PG or PG-13.

Since movies are all so different it is exceptionally difficult to uphold a standard that holds accurate for every solitary motion picture. And then there are the diverse things that people find offensive. One person may consider that a lone nude scene depicting potential sexuality is disgusting, while another may deem violence or a suicide by gunshot scene to be more offensive. Diverse people have different concerns when it comes to what they deem is appropriate to see at a movie.

The system for rating movies is based upon theme and content. Parents and individuals should take their own responsibility and judge for themselves. The rating system is just a guide and it should not be relied upon fully.

A G rating is suitable for General audiences. This means that there are no sexual or nude scenes. There is not swearing, drug or alcohol use, no cigarette smoking or violence.

PG means parent guidance is recommended. There may be fleeting moments of nudity or suggested sexuality. There may be smoking or swearing but none of these things are disproportionate. Parents are just cautioned that these brief scenes may exist. PG-13 is a stronger PG warning, intended for a movie that is not bad enough to deserve an R rating but still not clean enough for a PG rating. These movies are in general not apt for children under 13. There is likely some nudity or implied sexuality, or violence.

No one under the age of 17 will be allowed into an R rated movie except they are accompanied by an adult guardian or parent. There is likely sexual scenes, drug abuse or violence. Parents are encouraged to watch these movies first before deciding to allow a child or young person to watch it.

There is a new rating that is NC-17. No one under the age of 17 will be admitted into the theater. This movie may not unavoidably be pornographic but it will have adult content, be it sexual, violent or other that makes it completely improper for someone less than 17 years of age.

As with every parenting decisions, a parent must take their own responsibility for what movie is fitting for their own child. It is not astute to rely on the ratings system but merely to use it as a wide-ranging guide.
